Mechanism of Formation and Evolution of Lake System
  Studying on the formation process and geologic characteristics of lake basin; analyzing the impacts of the external and internal factors on lake environment evolution; revealing the mechanism of formation and evolution of typical lakes in China.
   
Lake Sediment and Environment Evolution
  Developing indexes for environmental change in lake system on different climate zones and lake sediments; reconstructing the lake’s high-resolution evolution process on different time scales; simulating the evolution process of lake environment under the human-nature interaction; evaluating the impacts of nature and human activities on different time scales.
   
Simulation and Prediction on Environmental Change in Lake System
  Constructing the database for lake sediment and environment evolution of lake system; developing the models and methods for environmental change prediction; simulating the environmental change in different regions.
   
 
 
Lake Hydrology and Water Resources
Lake Hydrological Process and Water Resources
  Studying on the change law of lake hydrological factors (e.g. lake temperature, lake currents, water waves, etc.); modeling the thermodynamic process of lake system; revealing the spatio-temporal variation of nutrients and life forms under the lake thermodynamic effects and the resuspension process and mechanism of bottom mud under the water dynamic effects; developing the physical parameters for improving water environmental quality and ecological restoration.
   
Lake Circulation and Water Balance
  Researching on the change law of lake circulation under the impacts of climate change and human activity; revealing the driving factors for the variation in lake water supply and the exchange mechanism of water between surface and underground in catchments; analyzing the impacts of sediment silting on sediment retention capacity; predicting the variation of water volume.
   
Regulation and Optimized Allocation of Lake Water Resources
  Analyzing the water requirements, driving forces and water resource carrying capacity in lake system; developing indexes for water resource economy assessment, environment and ecological benefit assessment; developing models for water regulation; optimizing water resource allocation decisions.

Mechanism of Nutrient Circulation and Eutrophication
  Studying on the sources, distribution and bioavailability of lake nutrients and their relationship to the level of eutrophication; evaluating the impacts of the critical nutrients on lake eutrophication; revealing the environmental geochemical process of nutrients transformation.
   
Formation Process and Mechanism of Combined Pollution in Lake
  Analyzing the exposure status and interface behavior of persistent pollutants in environment medium of lake system; demonstrating the environmental effects of single and combined pollutants; evaluating the pollution risks for water supply security; proposing evaluation criteria for lake water and sediment pollution.
   
Evolution Process and Eco-degradation Mechanism of Lake Ecosystem
  Researching on the characteristics of lake aquatic ecosystem in different regions; revealing the evolution law of biodiversity and its relationship with the structure and function of lake ecosystem; demonstrating the response mechanism and degradation process of lake ecosystem under the impact of human activities; proposing evaluation criteria for the ecological health of lake system.
   
Pollution Control and of Eco-restoration of Lake Ecosystem
  Developing the technologies for pollution curtailment, pollution control and water self-purification of lake ecosystem; providing complete technologies for different types of water pollution; studying on the principles and methods for improving the aquatic habitat and biodiversity restoration of lake ecosystem; proposing the optimal strategy of route for regulating and improving the structure of lake aquatic community.

Studying on the functional orientation and evolution of lake; proposing protection strategy and sustainable utilization pattern for lake-catchment system; constructing the evaluation index system for real-time monitoring and health evaluation on lake
Analysis and Modeling of Lake-Catchment Interaction
  Studying on the eco-environmental effects of lake system in the context of industrialization, urbanization and land use change; developing coupled models for material circulation in lake-catchment system and modeling the transport processes and flux changes of water, sediment, nutrients; analyzing the impacts of significant hydraulic engineering on ecological environment of lake-catchment system; demonstrating the evolution mechanism of flood and drought disasters.
